Direktivet setter minimumsstandarder for beskyttelse av enkeltpersoner som rapporterer brudd p\u00e5 EU-lovgivningen i ulike sektorer, inkludert offentlige anskaffelser, finansielle tjenester, produktsikkerhet, milj\u00f8vern og folkehelse. Det krever at medlemslandene etablerer omfattende varslingsmekanismer og sikkerhetstiltak for \u00e5 sikre at varslere trygt kan rapportere bekymringer og beskyttes mot gjengjeldelse. Direktivet krever ogs\u00e5 konfidensialitet, anonymitet, og s\u00f8rger for effektive rapporteringskanaler, riktig oppf\u00f8lging og tilgang til effektive rettsmidler for varslere. M\u00e5let er \u00e5 fremme \u00e5penhet, ansvarlighet og integritet i organisasjoner, samtidig som det fremmer en kultur med tillit og beskyttelse for enkeltpersoner som snakker om feil.
